5th Grade Curriculum
Religion
Religion is studied daily. Students are instructed in our faith, the sacred scriptures, the liturgical seasons, and the moral doctrine of the Church. As a school community we gather weekly for Mass.
Language Arts
The elementary language arts program includes reading, writing, listening, speaking, and research skills. The reading component includes phonemic awareness and comprehension skills. The writing component includes written comprehension, handwriting, grammar, and spelling skills. A variety of experiences in oral expression strengthen both speaking and listening skills. Research skills help students use information from books, technology, and observation. Fifth-grade students will expand their abilities to communicate effectively and will publish a book of their best work at the end of the year.
Math
Fractions and decimals are major topics in fifth grade. Students also work on rounding and estimation; convert within systems of measurement, and measure to the nearest 1/8th inch. Other topics include measurement, geometry, graphing, long division, two-digit multiplication, and a review of place value involving large numbers and decimals.
Science
Main topics to be covered include: astronomy, animals, biology, states of matter, electricity and magnetism, motion and forces.
Social Studies
Students study ancient civilizations of the world and review map skills. They also trace the origins of the first Americans and explore their lifestyle and cultural contributions. The impact of European exploration and settlement precede a study of the thirteen original English colonies.
Special Studies
Computers - Spanish - Library Science - Physical Education - Music - Art
